Protest by fire
Many young Afghan girls are forced into marriage, often suffering physical, sexual and psychological abuses at the hands of their husbands or his family. Self-immolation has become an epidemic. In 2007, Herat Regional Hospital opened a special ward for self-immolation victims, and receives an average of 6 cases per week. Most of them are between the ages of 13 and 22, and the majority do not survive. Poor hospital conditions favor opportunistic infections, and burn wounds are notoriously difficult and painful to treat. Self-immolation is a brutal form of suicide, but also a final act of protest.
